Mototaxi Junket: Day 4

Mototaxi Junket, Day 4: Drove 220km through the most beautiful stretch of “cloud forest” in the Amazon region of Peru, heading east toward Tarapoto and the ancient Inca ruins nearby. My mototaxi/ducky mobile is holding up nicely after getting the carburetor repaired. The starter still doesn’t work, my average speed is hovering around 25km/hour, the brakes barely function and sound like a dying whale (I hear a lot of that when I’m going downhill), but otherwise, she’s truckin’ along.

At this point, I’ve driven through 700km of deserts, mountains and jungles and given away a lot of rubber duckies. (It’s not too late to donate! Help me reach my $3000 goal by the end of the junket. Right now I’m at about $800. http://mototaxi.therubberduckies.com/ )

(Yes, this day 3 update is coming on day 5…I somehow thought I’d be able to upload a video, but decent wifi is hard to come by in Peru!) — in Naranjos Alto, Amazonas, Peru.

Mototaxi Junket: Day 3

1391452_10100597009734639_8953498075148669725_n

Day 3 of the Mototaxi Junket complete! Back to a tiny bit of society after two days driving precarious mountain roads on a rickety machine slightly more powerful than a riding lawnmower. Two mechanic visits and 15 hours of driving later, I am now in Pedro Ruiz, in the Amazon region of Peru. Last night, I was stranded in a roadside town and befriended some locals who were drinking in celebration of the election results…I ended up sleeping in a guy named Victor’s garage after muchas cervezas. Today, I descended from the desolate rocky mountains into colorful and humid Amazonia. Happened across another Mototaxi Junket team here (the first non-Peruvians I’ve seen in a day and a half) and am getting some much needed sleep. I’d post some pictures, but the internet here is waaaay tooo slooow. Needless to say, I’ve given away a ton of rubber duckies and am having a great time!

Mototaxi Junket: Day 1

Made it to Chulucanas, Peru after a loooong first day of mototaxi driving, and a few breakdowns. But so much for sleeping. The regional election results got announced and there has been honking and shouting and chanting in the streets for an hour straight…at 1am! Hopefully the mechanic gets some sleep, because I have an appointment with him first thing in the morning. ‪#‎mototaxijunket‬ — in Chulucana, Piura, Peru.

The Duck Bucket Challenge! Donations page is LIVE!

A month or so ago, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went viral and raised millions of dollars for ALS Research. In that challenge, people dump a bucket of ice water over their head and then challenge three other people to do the same within 24 hours, or donate to ALS research.

I figured what better way to spur on donations than to do my a bucket challenge of my own?

Here’s my video — for more details about the charities and how you can support them, visit the Donate page!

Mototaxi preparation with my Peruvian friend Pepe

I had a great day of junket preparation with my Peruvian friend Pepe! Pepe was an exchange student in our home town Owego, NY in 1989-1990, and he’s kept in touch with his hosts (the Gray family) and my mother ever since. We met up today in Colan / Paita and had a great lunch, and also I had Pepe accompany me on a shopping trip, where he did some crucial translating for me.

For all his help, Pepe is the first rubber ducky recipient!

My chariot for the next two weeks

My Mototaxi

Mototaxi: Acquired!

I will be driving this hunk-of-junk 3500km across the entirety of Peru. I just finished my first test drive, and it is as terrible as expected. The drive chain connects to the rear left wheel, so it constantly wants to turn right. Left hand turns, on the other hand, are a gargantuan feat of strength, fighting against the raw winding power of this 125cc engine. The starter is broken (it requires a kick start, every time, which means 10-20 attempts and a lot of swearing). Shifting gears on this thing is like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time, while riding a unicycle.

Getting this thing up over the Andes Mountains is going to be quite the task…but as a wise man once said:

“An adventure is never an adventure when it’s happening.” -Tim Cahill

The Mototaxi Junket starting line

I made it!

After a little mishap of discovering that the Adventurists had moved the starting like 77km away from the listed starting line in Piura, I have arrived at the Luna Nueva hotel in Colån, Peru. It’s a quiet, sleepy fishing village on the northwest Pacific coast of the country…perfect place to start an adventure!

Duck Day in Ithaca

On my last morning in the U.S.A. before catching my flight to Peru, my sister Clara and I had a few hours to kill in Ithaca. So we made this movie trailer of our GORGES day with our new rubber ducky friends!

Peter and Clara Duck Day in Ithaca

This was shot entirely on my iPhone 6, and edited using the built in iMovie app. iMovie comes with a bunch of silly movie trailer templates for different genres of film. The music and pacing is already set up…tou just drop the clips into place and change the text. This one was made using the “TEEN” template, and seems to be a bit of a Breakfast Club parody. 🙂

These are just two of the 100 rubber duckies I have with me, and they are all up for adoption!
